What Makes Tabla Here Different

An Instrument with Its Own Voice

The tabla is no metronome with skin — it sings. Two drums, an extraordinary range of tone and timbre, and a rich solo repertoire of its own: theka, kayda, rela, gat, and the thrill of a tihai landing on sam. Here you learn the tabla as a complete instrument, a voice in its own right — not merely a backing for someone else.

The Pulse of Every Art Form

Rhythm — लय — is the ground every Indian art stands on, and the tabla is its keeper. Kathak, vocals, sitar: each leans on the tabla to hold the laya. In time, as you grow proficient, that pulse becomes sangat — answering a dancer's footwork or a sitarist's raga, live and in the moment — a stage few schools can offer.

A True Gurukul Lineage

Three generations, one unbroken thread — guru to shishya, the closeness in which rhythm has always been handed down, from one pair of hands to the next.

For Every Learner, Anywhere

Children to adults, complete beginners to serious students — in person at Tarnaka and Gachibowli, or live online worldwide, always with real personal attention.

The tabla doesn't simply keep time — it speaks. Its bols — धा, धिन, ना, तिरकिट — are a language all their own, spoken as readily as they are struck. To learn the tabla is to learn to talk in rhythm.

It is a complete instrument in its own right: two drums of remarkable tone and colour, a vast solo repertoire, and the लय — the very pulse — that every other Indian art form leans upon. At Kala Kuteer we teach that voice and the hands together — the bols and the beat, with taal learned alongside them, never as dry theory before.

जैसी संगत वैसी रंगत

Jaisi sangat, waisi rangat \u2014 The company you keep colours who you become — and on the tabla, sangat is everything.

Frequently Asked

Do I need any prior experience to learn the Tabla?+

None at all. We begin with the simplest bols and clean strokes, and build your hands and your ear together, patiently, from there.

What age can I start learning Tabla?+

Almost any age. Children usually begin once they can sit comfortably and recite the bols, and adults of every age are welcome — rhythm is a muscle anyone can build.

Is the Tabla difficult to learn?+

It rewards patience more than talent. We teach the spoken language first, so the hands have something to follow — that makes the early stages far gentler than most people expect.

Can I learn Tabla online?+

Yes. We teach Tabla live over Zoom to students around the world, with the same gurus and curriculum as our in-person classes.

Are there exams or certifications?+

Yes — students can prepare for the graded examinations of the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya (ABGMM).
